Office 2007: rapid learning for rapid productivity
Health services, insurance
Background
For knowledge workers, an understanding of the applications within their computer’s standard operating environment (SOE) is essential to their performance. An upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007, part of most organisations’ SOE, has the potential to negatively impact productivity as staff find their way around new-look applications.
Driver
Following a merger, this health insurance provider sought to provide a standard operating environment across the new business. They took the opportunity to introduce Microsoft Office 2007 to their people. Their goal was to introduce the SOE in a way that would provide their people with a range of options for how they learned to use the new Office applications.
What we did
TP3 was engaged to develop a range of learning options and tools to support people as they began using Office 2007.
The project involved:
Development and delivery of Office 2007 upgrade seminars to large audiences around Australia
People then chose the level of training support they needed to work effectively in the Office 2007 applications, which included:
Short, small-group, hands-on training workshops for each application in the Office suite, and
Just-in-time, short learning support videos that provided a snapshot of new features of Office 2007 and each application within it. These were made available via the organisation’s learning portal and branded for the business.
Business impact
The user-choice approach to the learning component of this implementation proved cost effective and empowered individuals to choose how and when they learnt about the new features.
The initial upgrade seminars gave people enough information to confidently explore Office 2007 on their own, without needing significant amounts of formal learning support. Enrolments in the hands-on workshops were lower than expected, resulting in cost savings for the project without compromising on skill development.
