Blended Learning in an Essential Business Process

A State Owned Corporation (utility) reviewed and updated a key issues management process in an effort to improve workplace safety, which was used by engineers, maintenance crews, co-ordinators and external sub-contractors. Previously, staff and contractors were trained in the process by their business unit which resulted in duplication and the potential for inconsistency amongst users.

Existing Challenge

The utility sought to streamline and centralise education regarding the process to ensure that people performed key tasks safely and consistently. All current and future staff are required to attend the new standard training courses, which are tailored to each of the roles that participate in the process. The courses provide a process overview and address process coordination, planning and approval, and field implementation. The overview is delivered online, with all other training delivered as short face-to-face sessions.

What TP3 Delivered

The utility selected TP3 as their project partner because of its ability to design, build, and deliver the blended learning program from start to finish. This made the instructional design process more efficient and the training programs cohesive.

To do this, TP3:

  • Reviewed the business requirements and process documentation
  • Met with subject matter experts
  • Designed each of the 4 programs, outlined how sessions would be tailored to specific business units, and prepared outlines and storyboards
  • Developed the face-to-face training materials
  • Developed the eLearning content
  • Deployed the eLearning content to the utility’s LMS
  • Sourced and inducted experienced trainers to deliver face-to-face sessions
  • Administered enquiries and bookings for ‘public’ courses for sub-contractors
  • Arranged all logistics for training delivery, including workbooks and venues, and
  • Printed and issued accreditation cards to staff on completion of their skills assessment.

Business Impact

The delivery of the program includes an intensive schedule to train current staff and contractors, ongoing training for new starters and refresher training every three years. Feedback from participants has been resoundingly positive to date, with staff and sub-contractors receiving their accreditations on time, ensuring that they can safely execute the process.

The project team are pleased to have successfully delegated the administration of the training’s implementation, saving them hours of administration and allowing them to focus on their work priorities.
